In addition to its antioxidant activities, vitamin E is also vital for normal immune function and for maintenance of a healthy vascular system.
A powerful antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals and has a beneficial effect on all conditions associated with increased oxidative stress. Free radicals damage cells and can contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Vitamin E belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins, which means that it needs fats from food in order to be properly absorbed. Vitamin E is excreted in the liver before entering the bloodstream.
Vitamin E intake depends on age and sex, and is expressed in mg. The amount of Vitamin E in food and supplements is indicated in international IU units and they measure biological activity, not quantity. The natural source of Vitamin E is called alpha tocopherol (commonly referred to as d-alpha Tocopherol), while the synthetically produced form is referred to as dl-alpha tocopherol.
