NOW® OralBiotic™ contains the naturally occurring probiotic organism Streptococcus salivarius BLIS K12®, which has been clinically shown to support oral and throat health. Although it is not an antibiotic, OralBiotic™ BLIS K12® successfully colonizes the oral cavity at the expense of other bacteria, promoting oral health. It also helps to improve breath when used in conjunction with proper oral hygiene. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) provide nutritional support for S. salivarius.
Among the most numerous beneficial bacteria in the mouth, Streptococcus salivarius is typically the first one acquired in infancy. BLIS K12® is a powerful strain of S. salivarius that, when taken regularly, colonizes the mouth and throat and helps to maintain the natural defense system of the main entry point of the body. BLIS K12® has been clinically shown to support the maintenance of mouth, ear, nose, and throat health in children.

MORE INFORMATION
Advanced oral probiotic protection for the whole family
The mouth is an entry point for pathogens as it comes into contact with billions of bacteria. If a healthy balance of oral bacteria is thrown off by stress, exposure to disease or antibiotics, it can quickly lead to problems such as upper respiratory, throat and ear infections. The microorganisms in our mouth are a first line of defense against pathogens and an important part of maintaining healthy oral bacteria.
What is BLIS K12™?
BLIS K12™ is an advanced probiotic for the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract. It is a specific strain of Streptococcus salivarius (S. salivarius) with actions to help provide a natural defense against harmful bacteria in order to boost our immune system’s defenses against bacterial sore throat, ear infection, and other upper respiratory infections – and is especially indicated for children. S. salivarius is one of the most numerous beneficial bacteria found in the mouth of healthy individuals. However, only a small percentage of people have S. salivarius with BLIS K12 activity. The K12 strain was originally discovered as scientists tracked the oral bacteria of healthy children that did not develop sore throats for several years. Scientists found that this particular K12 strain of S. salivarius secretes powerful antimicrobial molecules called BLIS: Bacteriocin- Like-Inhibitory Substances, with the ability to inhibit harmful bacteria shown to contribute to otitis media, tonsillitis, and streptococcal sore throat.
Why is BLIS K12 so unique?
Most probiotic bacteria, including S. salivarius, compete with other microorganisms for space and nutrients in the oral cavity and in this way, act to maintain a healthy balance of oral bacteria. When BLIS K12 enters the mouth, it attaches to cells in the oral cavity and colonizes. By colonizing, BLIS K12 crowds out pathogenic bacteria, keeping them from adhering to the host. The final antibacterial punch comes from the production of BLIS molecules, Salivaricins A and B. Many potential pathogens are susceptible to these Salivaricins, including S. Pyogenes, one of the primary causes of bacterial sore throats, upper respiratory tract and ear infections.
Safety and Science in Children
Much of the research evaluating effects of BLIS K12 has been done in pediatrics. An important part of this work included tracking the oral bacteria of hundreds of school children, with and without streptococcal sore throat and otisis media, to establish the linkage between oral flora composition and incidence of upper respiratory infections.
BLIS molecules produced by K12 were shown to inhibit harmful oral bacteria such as S. pyogenes, a significant contributor to bacterial sore throats. Studies show that children who naturally have BLIS-producing S. Salivarius in their mouths, like BLIS K12, are less likely to set sore throats. In addition to activity against S. pyogenes, pilot studies of children with recurrent tonsillitis and otitis media (ear infections) have found reduced incidence of infections after taking BLIS K12.
Primary Advantages of BLIS K12
- Helps maintain healthy oral bacteria
- An oral probiotic able to colonize and persist in the mouth
- Safe and effective for children and adults
So, who should be taking BLIS K12?
BLIS K12 is safe for the whole family. Many of the studies that have been conducted have been with children, who have a susceptibility to bacterial throat and ear infections. All of these studies have shown that BLIS is a safe and effective protection. There is also strong evidence to suggest the benefits of BLIS K12 for people who travel. The increased exposure to bacteria and germs in the close confines of modern transport systems makes BLIS K12 an excellent prophylactic option. The safety of BLIS K12 has been determinatively proven in both laboratory testing and commercially in products which contain it over the last six years. Copies of the comprehensive studies conducted on the safety of BLIS K12 in oral infections, ear infections, upper respiratory infections, halitosis, and immunity are available upon request.
How much BLIS K 12 should I take?
BLIS K12 should be taken on a daily basis, as bacteria are constantly competing for territory in your oral cavity. A daily dose of 2 lozenges will help to maintain the microflora balance in your ear, nose, throat and mouth. It will also improve your immunity against bacterial diseases. For optimal results, allow the lozenges to dissolve in your mouth. They can be taken at any time of the day, but will provide you with the best results if taken after brushing your teeth. This is because this is when the bacteria have been swept out of your mouth. If taking antibiotics, wait at least 2 hours before taking your BLIS K12.
